Berlin Tag-3 EOD: Wedding to Schöneberg to Lichtenberg to Köpenick, the Werk-City Cross-Axis

Tag-3 EOD walking the Köpenick-Bahnhof platform at 16:50 Thursday with the field-book and the Hasselblad, the late-May raking sun on the platform-tiles, the Müggelspree-bridge in soft background

Day three is when Berlin shows you that it is four cities at once and they are all on the U-Bahn map.

Müllerstrasse at 10:14. Stefanie Brendel comes out of Vivantes-Süd-Wedding after a twelve-hour pediatric night-tail and buys a Schrippe at the Späti before catching the U6. Plus-Size-Pflege-Hand, Lavendel-knuckles, Birkenstock-Boston half-unlaced. Her mother Iris worked the same station from 1992 to 2018. The hand-line is a second-generation hand-line, traded over the corridor without anyone naming it as Tradition.

Stefanie at the Vivantes-Süd-Wedding staff-locker-room post-twelve-hour-shift Thursday morning, unlacing the Birkenstock-Boston on the bench, the pale-mint Pflege-coat hung on the wall hook behind her

Fuggerstrasse at 12:08. Manni Hellbusch waits outside WOOF for the spirits-truck. Plaid-flannel rust-on-brown, Karabiner left belt-loop, black Lederband on the right ring-finger since October 1991. Three coffins this year for Berliner Lederverein members who passed. He carries the year-count without softening it.

At 12:13 a Bear-Cub comes out of Café Berio thirty meters down. Jens Trautwein, mid-thirties, Carhartt Detroit faded at the elbows from a real Holzwerkstatt in Pankow. He nods at Manni across the street. Manni nods back. They have not spoken in six weeks. The nod is enough — this is the Schöneberg-Bear-axis micro-protocol.

Arndt at 13:30 at Café am Engelbecken. He moved the catalog-meeting from the office to the canal because the sun broke through. All-black mock-neck, dark trousers, black low sneakers, leather strap watch turned inside-wrist. One espresso, ninety percent listening, two clean sentences at the end. Depth over volume, but don't let the floor slip. The catalog reads depth and the catalog counts cards. Both at once.

Dong-Xuan-Center Halle 9 at 12:45 (other end of the day, same week). Trang Nguyễn-Hoàng builds Phở-bowls at a fifty-five-second rhythm. Code-switches Vietnamese to Deutsch to English depending on who is at the counter. Vater Vertragsarbeiter Rathenow 1985. Second-generation that did not go into Erinnerungs-Akademik — went into the Phở-Stall the uncle opened in 2005. The Werk-Erbe is the Stall.

Köpenick-Werft Slipway 1 at 15:30. Hartmut Wenzel held the steel Anschlagwinkel at chest-height for the Hasselblad because the layout-square explained the work without him having to explain it. Forty-five years on the Werft, hands washed before the camera came out because he did not want the Schweißnaht-grease in the frame. Portra reads the late-May raking sun off the Müggelspree without push.

Coming back into Mitte at the last linden-shadow hour, I took the chance to catch up with Marc and Arndt — both happen to be in Berlin this week. We met on a quiet side-street near the Spree, fifteen minutes under the linden-leaves, just the kind of unplanned three-way you only get when the city pulls everyone through the same Mitte-strip on the same afternoon.

The day was a single long S-Bahn-arc that crossed four Werk-Cities — Wedding-Pflege, Schöneberg-Bear, Lichtenberg-Vietnamese-2nd-Gen, Köpenick-Werft. Each Cross-City has its own body-line, its own hand-code, its own micro-protocol. Berlin operates as four cities one platform-transfer apart.

Six setcards delivered today (BER-020 through BER-025), one Werk-foto-shoot at the slipway, one café-meeting with Arndt at Engelbecken. The Voll-Sprint tomorrow is Tag-4 — closing the Berlin-week at Marzahn-Hellersdorf East-Plattenbau-spur plus a final field-walk through Mitte-Auguststrasse for the gallery-side catalog count.

The willow-pollen at Engelbecken was just starting to drop. By tomorrow the surface of the pond will read differently.
